Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty
Jenkins announces it's the first title to release on HBO Max in 4K Ultra HD;
HDR 10; Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. Warner Bros' Wonder Woman 1984 will be the
first movie to release on HBO Max in 4K. Directed by Patty Jenkins;
the highly anticipated sequel to the successful 2017 film Wonder Woman will see Gal
Gadot reprise her role as the titular superhero facing off against
comic villains Barbara Ann Minerva/Cheetah (Kristen Wiig) and Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal) in a
1980s setting. Originally scheduled to premiere in December 2019; the DC
Extended Universe film faced multiple delays; some of which were due to the
coronavirus pandemic; before finally being pushed to December as movie theaters
in major cities like New York and Los Angeles remained closed. As cases
continued to spread and theaters began to re-close; Warner Bros. decided to release Wonder Woman 1984 on HBO
Max alongside its theatrical release on Christmas Day. Since HBO
Max launched just over six months ago, the service had yet to add an
option to stream its content in 4K. Competitors like Amazon Prime
Video; Netflix and Disney+; the latter of which only launched several months
earlier; all offered subscribers 4K content. HBO Max's highest resolution
quality of 1080p has been a long-time complaint from subscribers. In June; HBO
Max product chief Andy Forssell announced that 4K HDR was a high priority
for HBO Max; but there had not been any changes or updates since. Once the
news that Wonder Woman 1984 was coming to
the streaming; many felt that the need for the HBO
Max to offer 4K was greater than ever to get the theater experience
while watching from home. Now viewers will officially get that experience.
